Good Reads to Help Us on Our Journey

 There is no end to interesting resources these days. Here are a few of my favorites. I’d love to hear yours!

BUILDING AN AUTHENTIC FOOD-LIFE:

•    Intuitive Eating  third edition,by Tribole and Resch
I love this book! A member of my pilot group gave it to me after our first workshop. It was so confirming to read this book as it lines up so well with the principles and tools taught in TLE workshop and my book, The Liberated Eater. It’s one of my all time favorites and is now in its third printing.

•    Eat What You Love and Love What You Eat by Michelle May
Dr. Michelle May closed a successful medical practice to teach the principles of Mindful Eating because she discovered that diets did not work for her or her patients and eating intuitively did. This book is thorough and well researched. It includes information on nutrition and exercise as well. I recommend it highly.

•    The Fat Fallacy by Will Clower
Dr. Clower moved to France and learned some amazing, freeing things about good, rich, real food. This book is liberating and full of wisdom.

•    Mindless Eating by Brian Wansink
This interesting and entertaining book will make you think twice before eating on auto-pilot.

•    French Women Don’t Get Fat [the secret of eating for pleasure] by Mireille Guiliano
Fun read…and full of eating-for-pleasure wisdom. If you just can’t believe that eating should be pleasant and guilt-free, this is your book. [sorry men, this is written for women –  but who knows, it could give you insight into your woman…and I bet you could use it]

GOOD SCIENCE :

•    Always Hungry? by David Ludwig

Explaining 20 years of research, this book will scratch your scientific itch! This book has also strongly influenced my food choices, helping me tweek my menu so that I get the healthy, lighter, more energetic results I want.

•    Move A Little, Lose A Lot by James Levine
So you don’t like to exercise? This is the book for you. We can be fit and never darken the doors of a gym.

CHANGING BEHAVIORS & MINDSETS:

•   I Though It Was Just ME (but it isn’t)  by Brene Brown                                                                             This book is based on seven years of groundbreaking research. Shame is destructive, and it greatly effects our relationship to food and body. So much of what we think are eating issues are really thinking issues. This is a great book – a must read for most of us. If you would love to exchange perfectionism, shame and fear for gratitude, empathy and joy – then read this book.

•   Change or Die by Alan Deutschman
This book had a profound effect on me and bolstered my confidence that anyone can indeed change.

•    Changing for Good by James Prochaska
Ok, so, this may not be the most riveting book I’ve ever read but if you want to understand the 6 stages of Change that all us humans go through, this is the book to read. I learned a ton from it – its worth the work.

•    When Food is Love by Geneen Roth                                                                                                                This book is written primarily with women in mind. It explores the parallels between eating struggles and relational struggles. Very helpful.

•    Brain Rules  by John Medina                                                                                                                          Good read for those fond of research and interested in how your brain works.

FOOD AND OUR PHILOSOPHY OF IT

•    In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan
I found this book to be fascinating!  It is encouraging because Dr. Pollan understands that eating for health is not complicated and should not cause us anxiety.

•    The End of Overeating by David Kessler
If you eat out often, this book is a MUST READ. Do not be unaware! What you eat OUT and what you prepare IN are not the same things.

LIFE AND THE FULL LIVING OF IT:

•    Positivity by Barbara Fredrickson

I’ve just read this book and I’m glad I did. If you’re a human being I think you will find significant wisdom in it – vital understanding of why its so important to tune your mind toward positivity rather than negativity. This book will give you practical tools to help you thrive – not just survive.

•    Boundaries by Cloud and Townsend
If you have a hard time saying “No” when you need to and then go and eat to make up for the stress you just caused yourself because you couldn’t say “No”… this is your book.

•   The Assertive Workbook: How to Express Your Ideas and Stand Up for Yourself at Work and in Relationships   by Randy J. Paterson

•   Mind Over Money by Ted Klontz and Brad Klontz

Very interesting book for those who feel that they tend to handle money and food in similar ways.
